Netball Alberta hosted its third annual Inter-School Tournament on Saturday March 11th, 2017, occupying the Bishop O’Byrne and Cardel Rec Courts at Cardel Rec South. Thank you to everyone in attendance for accommodating the venue change and making the tournament such a success.
Fifteen teams faced off during a total of thirty-one games among the two divisions, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and netball skill acquired through Netball Alberta school clinics and the tutelage of their committed teachers. We were excited to see five new schools participating this year, with those schools from last year not in attendance, hosting intra-school games and tournaments of their own.
A special thank you goes out to those teachers involved in organizing their school teams’ participation, for attending the tournament themselves in a coaching capacity. We were thoroughly impressed with your netball know-how and enthusiasm. Netball Alberta’s wonderful veteran and first-time coaches alike imparted their wisdom on these new players, umpired games, rang the cowbell with diligence and lead newbie scorekeepers with mastery in the midst of a tremendous number of spectators and players filling every nook and cranny of the gym and corridors. It was lovely to see many mother-daughter coaching pairings this tournament passing on the legacy of netball expertise. We were so overwhelmed to see an amazing number of parent supporters present throughout the day to watch their children excel in a new sport! The echoing cheers from parents and fellow students remind us all at Netball Alberta why we do what we do! It was fantastic to see each player improve throughout the day and give the competition their all!
As for the results of the tournament, we distributed ribbon to the teams placing first, second, and third in each division, with consolation Netball Alberta pins going to the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place teams.
The results were as follows:
Division 1 (Grade 3-4):
1st Place – Woodlands Elementary
2nd Place – Colonel Sanders
3rd Place – Ecole Holy Name - 1
4th Place – The Hamptons
5th Place – Rundle College Elementary

5th Place – Ecole Holy Name – 4

The support from parents, teachers, coaches, and players has been outstanding and we hope to support these players in their future netball endeavors including participation in league or further school activities. We look forward to watching their talent grow and to another successful Inter-School Tournament in 2018.
